From David Ward:
What an honour it was to be invited by Wordfest to serve as host for an evening with Robbie Robertson this past December! Luckily, I had a few months to prepare for this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.
It was a real delight to spend time getting reacquainted with The Band’s discography and to read widely on Ronnie Hawkins and Bob Dylan, who were so important in Robbie’s musical education. Working at CKUA, we are lucky to meet so many interesting people in the world of music. The Wordfest team and I were all a bit nervous as showtime approached but when Robbie arrived at the concert hall he put everyone backstage at ease.
The 90 minutes spent with him onstage were a delight. His storytelling skills were enough to make for a memorable evening but it was the gift-giving ceremony with revered Blackfoot elder Clarence Wolfleg at the close of the program that lifted everyone up and touched Robbie. As for his book, Testimony, it is a delight to read and its 500 pages are filled with his adventures playing music, travelling the world, and encountering some of the major cultural figures of the time (from Marlon Brando to Salvador Dali).
