Zakir
Hussain is the world's pre-eminent tabla player. His
father, Alla
Rakha, was the drummer of choice for Ravi
Shankar, a role Zakir would later fill. A brilliant and
amiable man, Zakir is called an "architect of world music"
for his ground-breaking work with guitarist John
McLaughlin in the group Shakti, and with the Grateful
Dead's Mickey
Hart in the Global Drum Project.
Zakir began rigorous training at the age of 7 and was touring
with his father by age 12. In a flowing conversation which
I had with Zakir last week (great personal connection, lousy
phone connection), he talks about practice, his father's role
as guru, and what it means to be "born to it."
Don't miss Lark in conversation with Zakir Hussain, Sunday,
May 11th at 5 PM.
