Unlike most North American families, Habib Koite's family urged him to forego a degree in engineering and pursue a career in music. Fortunately for the many fans of Habib's music, which includes Jackson Browne, Bonnie Raitt and Toumani Dibabate, Habib Koite has been creating and recording music for the last 10 years. About his own unique approach to music, he says: "We do not have to forsake the past in order to develop. The modern world, for all of its benefits, needs to keep its links to its folklore and history in order to retain its soul".
