Carlinhos Brown is a master of disguises. He is very playful in his productions, both musically and visually. He has worked with many popular Brazilian artists from the pop star Daniela Mercury to the heavy metal band Sepultura. He is a prolific songwriter, with 30 of his songs hitting the Brazilian charts in the last 10 years.

Although spending more of this time producing others' albums, Carlinhos regularly comes out with his own CDs. The latest is called Carlinhos Brown Es Carlito Marron, a play on words between Portuguese and Spanish. (Carlito Marron is Spanish for Carlinhos Brown.)

Brown is an assumed name - Carlinhos' extreme homage to James Brown. Rhythmic groove is a specialty of Carlinhos Brown, and his latest album is a global pop great.

On this album Carlinhos also works with Cuban musicians to create Brazilian/Cuban rhythmic blends. A couple of my Spanish speaking friends have cocked their ears in puzzlement at the speakers, until the zigzagging pattern between the two cultures becomes apparent to them.

Whatever Carlinhos produces is always energetic and fun. Highly recommended.
