SMOKEY HOGG 78 SAVED FROM FATE WORSE THAN DUMPSTER!

Now, here’s what you might call a rescue mission. I found this 1951 Smokey Hogg blues 78 languishing without a sleeve, in amongst a bunch of C&W discs that were stacked in a yellow milk crate. The record was completely scuffed up, dirty, scratchy and had a crack to boot. It looked like it was ready for the heap. However, I’ve rarely seen a Smokey Hogg 78 so I couldn’t leave it behind. I brought the poor thing home, cleaned it up, using some warm water with the tiniest bit of soap (I used a few drops of Sunlight dishwashing liquid - it leaves the least amount of residue), lightly scoured the grooves with my trusty toothbrush, rinsed off the soap, carefully patted it dry with a soft towel and recorded the thing on to the computer. It played with some snaps, crackles and pops. However, after spending too much time with Adobe Audition (the computer software program used to record The Room), I managed to make it sound a bit better.
We heard a snippet of the rough version as well as the complete ‘cleaned up’ version of I'm Leavin' on the October 2 New Arrivals - All 78s! broadcast of RRR.
