RARE 1953 THELONIOUS MONK 78 ON PRESTIGE.

Here’s a gem - my first Thelonious Monk 78 - from 1953.

Monk was a unique individual. Although jazz fans can casually hum his complicated melodies now, the guy suffered through a long period of misunderstood neglect before finally getting his due.

Monk’s music was pretty well fully formed in 1947 when he started his groundbreaking recordings for Blue Note but it wasn’t until his legendary run at New York’s Five Spot jazz club ten years later (John Coltrane in tow) that folks started to 'get it'. This 78, dating from four years before that 1957 Five Spot breakthrough, features Monk stubbornly sticking to his unique musical vision.
