RITA ABATZI - GREEK VOCAL 78

So, when you go to your local Sally Anne, see a big stack of Greek 78s and you can't read Greek but you have a feeling there might be some good music in the batch, what do you do? You buy them all, bring them home and check em out! That’s how this fine 78 found its way into my collection. I asked my friend Nikos, from the Okanagan, what this song was all about. He said ‘...in three words - love, pain and regret’.

Rita Abatzi began her singing career during the early 1930's. Along with Roza Eskenazi, Rita was the number one female star on Greek 78 rpm recordings during the decade until 1940.
I first heard Rita on a rebetika CD issued by Rounder a few years ago. (I’ve heard rebetika described as ‘Greek blues’).

We heard this excellent Greek vocal 78 on the June 5 RRR.
