Long Weekend
Between the dark days of the two great wars of this century, the world enjoyed a brief period of relative peace which became known as the 'long weekend'. This expression has been borrowed for the title of the first of three series commissioned by CKUA on popular music of the 20th Century.
The creators of CKUA's popular RAGTIME TO ROLLING STONES, Athabasca University professor David Gregory and CKUA Program Director Brian Dunsmore, present a set of programs which profile the development of popular music in Western culture between the Great Wars. This 48 program series provides an informative and entertaining look at popular music between 1918 and 1939. THE LONG WEEKEND is a co-production of CKUA and Athabasca University and is broadcast in support of courses offered by Athabasca University. There are two companion series:
FROM BOP TO ROCK, covering the era from the Second World War to 1960; and
ROCKY ROAD: FROM PRESLEY TO PUNK, covering the period from 1960 to 1980.
THE LONG WEEKEND ... Tuesdays from 3:00 to 4:00am.
