Much has been written by music columnists recently about the
Celtic Wave that has caught the music industry by surprise with
its rapidly growing popularity among young North American listeners.
Other radio programmers may now be scrambling to catch up with
this latest trend in popular taste but CKUA has known for a
long time that Celtic-influenced music has tremendous appeal
for music lovers, whether young or not-so-young.
THE CELTIC SHOW is hosted by an ex-patriate Scot and a veteran
of Alberta's folk music scene, Andy Donnelly. With his soft
brogue and wicked sense of humour, Andy entertains and educates
his audience on the marvellous diversity of musical styles
that reflect the influence of the Celtic tradition.
Selections range from gentle traditional ballads to hard-driving
rock tunes complete with bagpipes. On any given night, you
might hear the Tannehill Weavers, Dougie Maclean, Loreena
McKennit, Sinead O'Connor, the Rankin Family, the Pogues,
Silly Wizard, the Chieftains, Christy Moore, Ashley McIsaac
or The Water Boys.
Touring artists often drop by the studio to put on a live
performance and chat with the host.
THE CELTIC SHOW can be heard Friday evenings from 6 to 8PM.
