Long before the Celtic wave thundered
triumphantly onto our shores and became popular among young North American listeners,
CKUA appreciated that Celtic-influenced music has tremendous appeal for music-lovers,
whether young or not so young. The Celtic Show, a Friday-night staple
since 1996, is hosted by an expatriate Scot and a veteran of Alberta's folk-music
scene, Andy Donnelly. With his soft brogue and wicked
sense of humour, Andy entertains and enlightens his audience with the marvellous
diversity of musical styles that reflect the influence of the Celtic tradition.
Selections range from gentle, traditional ballads to hard-driving rock tunes
complete with bagpipes. On any given night, you might hear the Tannehill Weavers,
Dougie Maclean, Loreena McKennitt, Sinead O'Connor, the Rankin Family, the Pogues,
Silly Wizard, the Chieftains, Christy Moore, Ashley McIsaac, the Waterboys and
more. Touring musical guests drop by and share the magic that they bring to the
airwaves. And Andy takes the show on the road on the first Friday of each month
in 2009. So come on in, put your feet up and welcome to the wee Celtic Show,
a wondrous, wee trip through the very best music of the Celts and beyond. Three
hours of wee Celtic cuddles, ballads that would bring a tear to a glass eye, and
jigs and reels to make you bounce in your baffies. The Celtic Show…
Friday evenings from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. on CKUA. Andy Donnelly is taking
