RedMapleLeaves

As the rusty hue of autumn embraces us, and leaves crackle beneath our feet with the tenderness of rice paper, we are reminded that change is central to human life. And change is never so apparent as at this time of year.

CKUA is also embracing change, moving into a new building and we want to share the experience of moving with you. Through the month of October, we are asking for your stories and musical suggestions tied to moving, or in the broadest sense - change.

Submit your request and short note to web@ckua.com and we will post your suggestions on this page. Then each and every Friday morning in October, Tony King will play a handful of your requests tied into moving. Make the most of your Fall by sharing the soundtrack of some of your life changes…

Listener Faves

Gypsie Laddie. In this old ballad, a noble lady takes a leap of faith into a totally different life - by running away with gypsies! Sung by Alberta artist Rosaleen Gregory on her CD "Sheath and Knife".

"They gave to her of the nutmeg brown,
They gave to her of the ginger,
She gave to them a far better thing,
The gold rings off her finger..."

Another song that captures this idea of leaving it all behind and striking out anew: Al Stewart's "Lord Grenville" on his 1976 album "Year of the Cat' "

"Go and tell Lord Grenville,
The tide is on the turn
It's time to haul the anchor up,
and leave the land astern..."

Lucinda Williams - Here in California

When I was young my mamma told me
She said child take your time
Don't fall in love too quickly
Before you know the one
She held me round the shoulders
In a voice so soft and kind
She said love can make you happy
And love can rob you blind
Here in California fruit hangs heavy on the vines
There's no gold I thought I'd warn you
And the hills turn brown in the summertime
Now I will learn to love you
But I can't say when
This morning we were strangers
And tonight we're only friends
I'll take the time to know you
I'll take the time to see
There's nothing I won't show you
If you take your time with me
Here in California fruit hangs heavy on the vines
There's no gold I thought I'd warn you
And the hills turn brown in the summertime

There's a old familiar story
An old familiar rhyme
To everything there is a season
To every purpose there's a time
A time to love and come together
A time when love longs for a name
A time for questions we can't answer
Though we ask them just the same
Here in California fruit hangs heavy on the vines
There's no gold I thought I'd warn you
And the hills turn brown in the summertime

Here are a couple of songs about change that I love...

Everything Must Change
Kind of slow but amazing lyrics

Who Knows Where the Time Goes – Sandy Denny version
This is one of my all time favorite songs.  Like the majority of my favorite songs, I first heard it on CKUA.  (Cam Hayden used to play it when he was the morning guy.  I’ve been listening since 1991)
Across the evening sky, all the birds are leaving
But how can they know it's time for them to go?
Before the winter fire, I will still be dreaming
I have no thought of time
For who knows where the time goes?
Who knows where the time goes?
Sad, deserted shore, your fickle friends are leaving
Ah, but then you know it's time for them to go
But I will still be here, I have no thought of leaving
I do not count the time
For who knows where the time goes?
Who knows where the time goes?
And I am not alone while my love is near me
I know it will be so until it's time to go
So come the storms of winter and then the birds in spring again
I have no fear of time
For who knows how my love grows?
And who knows where the time goes?

There's a beautiful song by Martha Wainwright called Don't Forget that reminds me of Autumn.  It's a song about the changing seasons and the memories of a relationship ending.

Lori in Calgary

Summer comes and rain falls away
But the very next day it seems
The snow comes to stay

And you too will go just like the dog days do
I'll put on my hat, my gloves, my scarf
To keep the cold apart

But there are no hats, gloves, scarves for the heart
Just a cold wind which leaves its frosted mark

Don't forget that I will always love you
Just a reminder to help you pave your pathway
Summer comes, Fall it cools
Winter it snows, Spring it rains
And you go

But in my silly mind I've gotten married to you
You're across town, don't even have a clue
Or these images that in ten years
I'll run into you & fall right back inside of you

Don't forget that I will always love you
Just a reminder to help you pave your pathway
Fall it cools, Winter it snows
Spring it rains, Summer comes
And you go

So when will we meet next and where will it be
On a platform track in an old movie
Cause time moves in circles & can leave you anywhere

Four Strong Winds, is my personal autumn anthem for both complete life altering change, and a simple change of the seasons.

Take your pick, Tyson, Young, Guthro, Cash, Jennings, Dylan the list could go on and on.  Truly an Alberta classic worthy of a spin or two.

One of my favourite songs with an autumn connection is Fallen written by Ron Sexsmith, performed beautifully by k.d. lang on Hymns of the 49th Parallel.

That one by Van Morrison, where they're listening to Chet Baker, on the beach, in the sand, when the leaves come falling down. Love that fall-time tune.

Follow me down, follow me down, follow me down
To the place beside the garden and the wall
Follow me down, follow me down
To the space before the twilight and the dawn

(When The Leaves Come Falling Down from Back On Top)

Valdy’s Peter and Lou; the song takes me back to my elementary school days, listening to the transistor radio while taking in colourful October leaves under grey skies on the way home from school.
Todd - Edmonton

T-Bone Burnett’s True False Identity has been my October soundtrack for 5 years. In particular, I LOVE Zombieland. It has a creepy, chilly, bare-branches kind of sound that is perfect for this time of year.
Mandy - Edmonton

My favourite Fall song is Autumn Leaves; there are several lovely versions of this tireless classic, but the one I like the best comes from a “chillout” compilation and it is by a group called “Coldcut,” (the Irresistable Force Mix Trip 1). It is a lovely version full of the soft “chilled “ sound.
David - Red Deer

Autumn Leaves - Miles Davis. A great version of a well-known tune that finds new pathways inside the song.
Karen - Edmonton
