Thoughts on the Spring Campaign

April 23rd brought about an interesting turn of events for Albertans with a historic election that ended with some unanticipated results. It also marked the end of the CKUA Spring Campaign. Just like politics, CKUA fundraisers are subject to all kinds of forces that make it very difficult to predict the final results until the very end.

For those following CKUA’s campaign results, you’ll know that our last two fundraisers have landed on the “soft” side. While the situation is far from being dire, it is serious. And we are taking it seriously.

To put some perspective around the situation, our goals for these last two fundraisers were lofty. CKUA faces increased budgetary pressures each year as the costs of doing business increase. We need to continue to increase revenue in order to maintain the operation. Approximately one third of our donation revenue is contributed during our semi-annual campaigns. They are the most public piece of our fund development efforts but they are not the sole source of donation revenue. The other two thirds of our donation revenue come primarily from our 8200 monthly donors, plus some grants. In addition to donation revenue, CKUA also receives some commercial revenue from advertising sales and from site rentals on towers.

In the months to come we will be moving forward with some new initiatives to try and make up the targeted shortfall before the end of our fiscal year on August 31st. It’s very important to note that all of this revenue is directly attributable to CKUA’s operational needs. We are going to be moving into a much-needed new facility but there are separate activities underway to support that capital project. Every dollar raised during campaign and from our monthly donors is spent on operating the station.

To everyone who has stepped up to support CKUA, we can’t thank you enough. None of this would be possible without your generous support. Many of you have called or emailed to express your concerns about not hitting our goal this fundraiser and we certainly appreciate your sentiments. With your continued support, we remain hopeful and confident that we will get there!
