Counting Down to #1
Curious to know which albums earned the most spins on CKUA in 2018? Bahamas, Mariel Buckley and Nathaniel Rateliff & The Night Sweats all topped the list. Find out who else made the Top 100 of 2018.
Digging Roots Live at Studio A
What’s in a name? For the band Digging Roots, it’s the story of a medicine walk that changed the course of Raven Kanatakta’s life and career. Read the entire story behind the group’s moniker. Raven and members of his JUNO Award-winning outfit recently stopped by CKUA’s Studio A (minus Raven’s wife and bandmate ShoShona Kish who was en route to Alberta). Watch an acoustic rendition of the band’s hit “Wake Up and Rise,” above.
CKUA Top 5 for January
Once again, Philadelphia-born Amos Lee soars to the top of our list for January with My New Moon. This is his seventh studio album and first with label Dualtone Records. Lee’s signature spare melodies and haunting vocals are in evidence on this album, but a more subdued tone emerges through some of the tracks. Listen to Whiskey on Ice, a moving story inspired by a young couple he met who lost their son to cancer.
1. Amos Lee – My New Moon (Dualtone)
2. Mark Knopfler – Down The Road Wherever (British Grove / Blue Note )
3. Foxwarren – Foxwarren (Arts & Crafts)
4. Anderson .Paak – Oxnard (Aftermath)
5. nêhiyawak – starlight (Arts & Crafts)

New Year, New You?
New Year’s resolutions have been all the rage and maybe you too have a list of things you want to get started on (or finally complete) this year.
You want to fit in more movement, eat healthier, embark on a new hobby or take the trip you’ve been dreaming about for years! Or you may want to make a commitment that benefits their larger community – like volunteering, donating old clothing, or starting a monthly donation.
Many of you didn’t need a resolution to start a monthly donation to CKUA. You understand the work we do in the community all year round and actively show your support every month.
Thank you to the many donors who support CKUA monthly – you make every month special, so we want to make your month special too.
To show our continued thanks, we draw monthly prizes that all monthly donors are entered into! You can find out more about these prizes, and learn how you can become a monthly donor, here.
Find out who won this month’s prizes, including a donated hour, CD prize pack and more, provided by Chianti’s Cafe, ZINC Restaurant/Catering, Blush Lane Organic Market, Art Gallery of Alberta, Acquired Taste Tea Company and Parkland Nurseries and Garden Centre.
Congratulations to our prize winners; thank you to our tremendous sponsors, and our outstanding monthly donors!
2018 was a memorable year for CKUA. Thanks to everyone who played a part!
