On December 17, Tommy Banks turned 80 and CKUA hosted his birthday party in style, joined by a stellar group of top-tier musicians – a fitting tribute to a man whose influence echoes throughout the industry.
A cross-section of Albertans attended the soiree, from family members to politicians; from CKUA staff and board members to academics, all with one thing in common: they share friendship and love for Tommy Banks. They all turned out to honour someone who has been so important in the life of Alberta and this radio station, resurrected in 1997 in large part due to Tommy’s efforts.
Providing the musical backdrop to the evening of celebration were:
Piano: Chris Andrew (and Tommy himself!)
Guitar: Bobby Cairns
Drums: Sandro Dominelli
Bass: Kodi Hutchinson
Trumpet: Al Muirhead
Saxophone: PJ Perry
The Edmonton Journal‘s Nick Lees was a guest, and captured the celebration in this article.
