New York, New York…with CKUA! August 25-31, 2008
Visit the most exciting city in the world on this six night trip to The Big Apple!

Times Square

New York is now considered to be the capital of the world. It is an amazing place to visit. Whether you visit for the exclusive shopping, phenomenal dining or the culture, New York City has something for everyone. You will find yourself dizzy when trying to decide just what to do first in this city of abundant activities. No matter if this trip will be your first or your tenth, we guarantee you will see and experience another side of New York.

Statue of Liberty  Greenwich Village

After an introductory coach trip of the city's most famous sights you will see the city through the eyes of local experts on three walking tours through three of the city's most famous neighborhoods. A walk through Greenwich Village will bring you the "History and Music in Greenwich Village". Our local expert will bring you to the blues, folk and big band haunts and hangouts of everyone from Duke Ellington to Bob Dylan, as well as the fascinating history of the neighbourhood from country retreat to bohemian "left bank" enclave. After this later afternoon tour you will end up at local restaurant to have dinner, before going to a club for music later in the evening.

Harlem

The holiday's "music theme" continues on another night with a six hour "A Musical Exploration of Harlem". Starting in the early evening we take the A Train north to a neighborhood dinner spot in an old brownstone where will enjoy an exceptional multi-course meal. The restaurant is so charming and unexpected, and the food is so good and well presented that it will set your evening off just right. We follow dinner with a walk through a lovely Sugar Hill neighborhood to a popular neighborhood jazz dive that has been around since the days of Luckey Roberts. Your next stop will be a Bohemian / African World-beat club where you will see the direction of the 2nd Harlem Renaissance focusing on a music that find it's inspiration in the diversity of Harlem's population in the 21st Century.

Hear an interview with Gordon Polatnick of Big Apple Jazz Tours, who will be leading the lucky winners on this tour!

Harlem Jazz District   Harlem Jazz District

We continue with a walk through the historical Harlem Jazz District where your local guide will point out the haunts and homes of the jazz elite from Eubie Blake and Scott Joplin, through the speakeasy prohibition era of Bessie Smith, Bill Bojangles Robinson, Louis Armstrong and Fats Waller, all the way through to the big band era of Chick Webb, Ella Fitzgerald, Count Basie, Billie Holiday and Duke Ellington, the history continues through the bebopper era of Charlie Parker, Miles Davis, Dizzy Gillespie, Thelonious Monk and onto today's local giants like Bill Saxton who we will see at his own refurbished speakeasy on Harlem's Swing Street.
