Questions:
Will CKUA be broadcasting via satellite
radio soon?
CKUA is currently working with XM to provide a weekly,
3 hour all Canadian program on one of their all Canadian channels.
No broadcast dates have been set, and we're still at the talking
stage. When we launch, there will be publicity around
it.
Will CKUA podcast soon?
As a radio station, CKUA pays a yearly fee to play
the music listeners love over the airwaves and at the same
time streamed live on the internet. But, in order to archive
and distribute our music programs via mp3 podcasts, we would
have to purchase the music rights, or otherwise make arrangements
with the artists to allow us to use their copywrited material.
This would be very expensive. For that reason, we do not have
any plans to podcast our regular music programs. However,
we are looking into the value of podcasting some of our original
news and spoken word educational programming.
How long are the pledge drives?
How many do you have each year?
The pledge drives usually go for 17 days. We have
them twice a year - once in the fall (October) and once in
the spring (April).
Which shows do you have archived
so I can listen to at my convenience?
There are
a number of performer interviews which are archived under
Audio Archives.
Some of our current and recent spoken word programming is
also available, such as ArtBeat, Arts Alive, Sunday Magazine,
Innovation Alberta, Inspiring Leadership, The Voice of Water,
and Earth & Sky. Another show that is posted in text is Arts
& Culture Guide. Just go to the respective show, and follow
the links to previous shows.
What are the themes to the Saturday
and Sunday Breakfast Programs?
There are actually 2 themes that are used on both "Saturday
Breakfast" and "Sunday Breakfast"....the first one (the one
with harpsichord and horns) is the fifth movement of Handel's
Concerto a due cori #2 in F, HWV 333....we use a recording
on the Berlin Classics label (catalogue #0021692BC) featuring
Max Pommer conducting the Neues Bachisches Collegium Musicum.
It was originally released in 1981 and re-released in 1997.
The other theme (the one with flute) is by Leopold Mozart. It's
the first movement of his Symphony in G (Eisen G7) and it's
from a 2 CD-set on the CPO label (catalogue # CPO 999 144-2)
that came out in 1992. It features Bohdan Warchal conducting
the Slovak Chamber Orchestra.
How do we get our community event
on CKUA?
Chris Allen has compiled some guidelines
to writing a public service announcment for submission to
CKUA. You can view the guidelines by clicking
here.
Why do you use Windows Media Player?
We
were paying many thousands of dollars (no exaggeration) for
licenses for the 100 Audio streams we had. On top of that
is our bandwidth bill. Windows Media Services is 100% completely
free. We had 2 options when it came to expanding our streams
to accommodate listener demand. Double or triple our already
exorbitant yearly licensing fees and then buy a bigger pipe
from our host - or switch to Windows Media Services, have
complete control over the number of streams we can provide,
and invest the savings into a bigger pipe. We are a public
radio station. We really only had one choice.
Is it possible for CKUA to be broastcast
on the same FM frequency (i.e. 97.3,97.5) throughout the province?
Unfortunately the reason CKUA ended up with so many frequencies
is due to a rather complex CRTC ruling to prevent radio transmitters
from conflicting with competitors. We're one of the few radio
networks of our kind in the world. So in a way it's that way
to protect us from ourselves :-) . We'd all like to have it
simplified, but we're years of paperwork away.
How do I find out about a song that was
played on your station?
First, visit the show you heard the song on and select "Playlists".
Then search for the date you heard the song on and select
the appropriate playlist. If the playlist is not posted yet,
or if you can't find the song, please email ckualibrary@ckua.com.
How do I find a CKUA sponsor?
All our sponsors are listed in the Corporate
Sponsorship section, a link available right on the home
page. Clicking on Current Sponsors and then on the sponsor
name will take you to their web site, if they have one
How do I email an announcer or staff?
All staff at CKUA have an email address. It's always firstname.lastname@ckua.com.
Or find them in the staff
directory.
