On this week’s Mixtape, soul meets jazz and becomes an accidental choral sensation.
Following the release in 2011 of her album Play, Coco Love Alcorn took a 5 year break from heavy touring to raise her young daughter. When the time came to start work on a new album, an injury forced her to put down her guitar and explore songwriting from a new perspective; to see what would happen if she wrote with just her voice. And so began a journey of layering vocals and rhythms on a 5 track looper. In the fall of 2014 she released a video of herself performing one of these first looper layered songs, “The River”.
That video brought Coco and her music to the attention of, not only music lovers in general, but choirs and choral groups around the world. With release of her 2016 album Wonderland even more of her songs have found their way into the choral repertoire and that, in turn, has brought more listeners to her joyful and genuine, soulful and compelling music. There is a positive force that just oozes out of her pores, and it’s as infectious as all get out, so make some space this Wednesday evening at 7 and recharge your batteries with an hour of Coco Love Alcorn’s Mixtape.
(Coco was in Alberta earlier this month for the Canmore Folk Music Festival and she’ll be back in November. Find those dates on CKUA’s Events Calendar)
