It’s here again – CKUA’s list of the essential albums of the year, as chosen by Alberta’s musical community.

We asked almost 40 experts – including CKUA staff, musicians, festival organizers and others – to pull together their lists of the must-listen-to albums of 2017. The result was hundreds of picks spanning across all genres and musical tastes.

Everyone got 100 points to play with, and they weren’t allowed to give any album more than 30 points. We’ve collected the submissions, crunched the numbers and have figured out the 40 most-loved albums below for you to explore.

If you want to see what the individual jurors picked, you can find that here.

The Siren’s Song — Kacy & Clayton

115 Points // 7 Nominations

This is a stellar, self-assured folk-rock record that finds these youngsters really establishing their very own distinctive style — even as they evoke sounds the timeless, vintage music that’s inspired them. – Grant Stovel

Selected by:
Amy van Keeken // Elliott Garnier // Erik Grice // Grant Stovel // Ryan Dyck // Scott Franchuk // Sue Panning

Selected by:
David Myles // Lionel Rault // Lisa Wilton // Scott Franchuk // Scott Lilwall // Allison Brock

Antisocialites — Alvvays

66 Points // 6 Nominations

Melancholic but sparkling. This Canadian indie outfit is maturing as a band, and those who grew up loving such jangly guitar-wielding bands as The Smiths will find a lot to like with this album. – Lisa Wilton

Selected by:
Oskar Zybart // Lisa Wilton // Jason Flammia // Erik Grice // Hayley Muir // Scott Lilwall

Soul Of A Woman — Sharon Jones and the Dap-Kings

66 Points // 4 Nominations

Last year we had final statements from Cohen and Bowie. This year it was the unforgettable Sharon Jones. A beautiful parting gift to all of us. – Monica Miller

Selected by:
Monica Miller // Terry David Mulligan // Yolanda Sargeant // Hayley Muir

Elwan — Tinariwen

62 Points // 3 Nominations

The best band in the world. – Shuyler Jansen

Selected by:
Kerry Clarke // Lark Clark // Shuyler Jansen

The Weather Station — The Weather Station

60 Points // 4 Nominations

Self-titled, self-produced, self-actualized — it’s the sound of a gifted music-maker coming into her own as songwriter, a singer, and a producer. – Grant Stovel

Selected by:
David Ward // Grant Stovel // Kathryn Calder // Scott Lilwall

Capacity — Big Thief

51 Points // 3 Nominations

Stories unfold through lead singer Adrianne Lenker’s lyrics like an endless ribbon, unflinching. Capacity finds Big Thief firmly nestled in the catharsis through gorgeous melodies and evocative words. As Lenker sings, “For in the dark there is release.” – Tony King

Selected by:
Cathy Ennis // Tony King // Hayley Muir

Khlebnikov — Danny Michel

50 Points // 3 Nominations

Danny Michel on a journey, “….that would unknowingly change my life forever”, this is the soundtrack that was born there. – Baba

Selected by:
Baba // Scott Lilwall // Sue Panning

Nature Girl — Scotty Hills

50 Points // 2 Nominations

“I Want to Love You” is my #1 sad in the bathtub song- but seriously, the production and arrangements are beautiful- and I love Hills’ voice and lyrical phrasing. – Audrey Ochoa

Selected by:
Audrey Ochoa // Yolanda Sargeant

Harmony of Difference — Kamasi Washington

45 Points // 3 Nominations

As a powerful metaphor for how our differences can help bring us together, this inspired composer/sax player gives us five beautiful (and very different) songs, then a sixth — which is all five of them put together! – Grant Stovel

Selected by:
Arthur Fafard // Grant Stovel // Jason Troock

Semper Femina — Laura Marling

45 Points // 2 Nominations

Since the day it came out, this album took the top spot on my list and hasn’t moved since. I love it. Wicked songwriting, with truly imaginative melodies, great guitar playing and tremendous lyrics mixed with the best producer in the game these days (Blake Mills). It rules. – David Myles

Selected by:
Tony King // David Myles

DAMN. — Kendrick Lamar

42 Points // 3 Nominations

He’s the biggest star in hip hop for good reason. He’s the best. Great lyrics, original beats and a flow that is unmistakably his own. – David Myles

Dark Matter — Randy Newman

40 Points // 2 Nominations

Absolutely insane production. – Scott Franchuk

Selected by:
Erik Grice // Scott Franchuk

Drunk — Thundercat

40 Points // 2 Nominations

What can you say about a bassist who takes the seemingly disparate elements of the melodious voice of Michael McDonald and the edgy club tainted grooves of Flying Lotus, puts them all in a box, shakes the whole thing up and comes out with one of the more creatively textured albums of the year. Thundercat’s Drunk suffers from no impairments. – Tony King

Selected by:
Audrey Ochoa // Tony King

The OOZ — King Krule

40 Points // 2 Nominations

Archie Marshall moves between grimey jazz and moody lo fi heartbreak, with saxophones and turntables! It’s personal and uninviting and engrossing, definitely something to sit down and listen to all the way through. – Arianne Smith-Piquette

Selected by:
Arianne Smith-Piquette // Paul Brooks

Whiteout Conditions — The New Pornographers

40 Points // 2 Nominations

The New Pornographers’ self-described “power-pop krautrock” record covers a ton of ground – from anxieties over America’s new political climate (“High Ticket Attractions” / “Avalanche Alley”), to Newman’s reflections on depression and loss (“Whiteout Conditions”). The band makes up for Dan Bejar’s absence by delivering one of their most cohesive, relevant albums to date. A record that could only have been made in 2017. – Elliott Garnier

Selected by:
Elliott Garnier // Scott Lilwall

Black Origami — Jlin

30 Points // 2 Nominations

Taking everything that is bleak about Gary, Indiana and installing it on the dance floor, while keeping a mindful eye on the door of the club for potential intrusion is no small feat. Jlin excels at making the ordinary sparkle! – Tony King

Selected by:
Tony King // Paul Brooks

Colors — Beck

30 Points // 2 Nominations

If there’s been anything predictable about Beck’s 12-album, 25-year career, it’s that Beck is not one for repeating himself. Each record release brings something a little bit different to the mix ; while remaining very recognizably Beck. On his new album ‘Colors’, we see a side of Beck that we have only glimpsed before. – Lionel Rault

Selected by:
Elliott Garnier // Lionel Rault
