iTunes loves him. CBC loves him. But before any of that, CKUA fell under his spell…completely and happily. He sports a beautiful vintage Gibson guitar and an equally beautiful vintage afro.

He is Alex Cuba and his latest, a self-titled release on his own Caracol record label, is a hip-shaking example of how Cuban rhythms, funk, rock, soul and pop can not only be friends, but marry and have beautiful children.

After emigrating to Canada (Victoria) his first recording with twin brother Adonis (The Puentes Brothers - Morumba Cubana) was nominated for a JUNO. In 2004 (now living in Smithers, BC) he created the Alex Cuba Band, edging away from the traditional and incorporating the popular music he had listened to on the radio as a young man in a small town outside Havana.

Humo de Tabaco won him his first JUNO Award. The magic was repeated in 2007 with Agua del Pozo as Alex's sound really came together and that Gibson guitar stood front and centre. The new CD? Loveitloveitloveit. It's as sweet and funky and soulful as the man himself. Live? Even better. Check myspace.com/alexcuba for upcoming performances.
