Anaïs Mitchell is most-likely best known to CKUA listeners for her folk-opera Hadestown, a project she has nurtured and developed for more than a decade. The original concept, a series of songs re-casting the Orpheus myth and setting it in depression-era American, was released as an album in 2010 featuring Anaïs herself in the role of Eurydice with special guests Justin Vernon (Bon Iver) as Orpheus, Ani DiFranco as Persephone, and Greg Brown as Hades.

Here is a video of Anaïs performing one of the most-loved (and most prescient!) songs from Hadestown on A Prairie Home Companion in in October 2016. Joining her are host Chris Thile with Sarah Jarosz, Rich Dworsky, Chris Eldridge, Brittany Haas, Paul Kowert, and Ted Poor.

Eventually Hadestown became a full-blown theatre piece making its off-Broadway debut in October 2016. And now a new version – with its sights set on Broadway itself – is enjoying its Canadian premiere at the Citadel Theatre in Edmonton.
Proud as Anaïs Mitchell is of the evolution of Hadestown, there is so much more to this singer and songwriter! We’ll explore her many influences Wednesday evening at 7 with Anaïs Mitchell’s Mixtape.
